What is a manometer?

A manometer is an instrument for measuring pressure of gases. It usually consists of a U-shaped tube with both arms open. Mercury is at the bottom of the U and slightly up in the arms. When a gas with a pressure higher than the pressure of the atmosphere enters one arm, the mercury moves up the other arm, indicating the pressure of the gas by the amount it moves.
