Jan Fyt (1611-61) was a Flemish painter and etcher. was born in Antwerp. At 20 he joined the Guild of St Luke at Antwerp and from 1631 lo 1641 he studied in Italy. He returned lo Antwerp to work and in 1652 he became dean of the Guild of the Romanticists. In a style influenced by Rembrandt. Fyt painted animals, becoming particularly noted for his dogs. He often collaborated on pictures with Rubens, painting only the animals. His animal etchings contain landscape backgrounds. Among his paintings are "Dog Devouring Game," "Two Greyhounds," and "Dead Game."
