Galleon is the name formerly given to Spanish ships of war with three or four batteries of cannon, and later applied to the large Spanish merchant ships, usually with four decks. Two fleets sailed every year from Spain—one to Mexico, and the other to Peru. The former were called "the flota," and the latter "the galleons."
