Girolamo Frescobaldi (1583-1644) was an Italian musical composer and organist, was born in Ferrara. Frecobaldi early gained a reputation as a singer, and later as an organist, and in 1614 was appointed organist at St. Peter's, Rome. This position he held, with a short interval of absence in Florence, until his death. Frescobaldi's compositions, which are numerous, include both instrumental and vocal pieces; among them a collection of five-part madrigals, Ricercari et cantoni francesi, Capricci sopra diversi soggetti and Arie musicali a piu voci.
