How can grasshoppers make so much noise?

For a SMALL CREATURE a grasshopper makes a big racket. He simply rubs his hind legs across his wings. Each leg has a rough edge, somewhat like the teeth of a comb. Each wing has ridges like the ridges on corrugated cardboard. Try scratching a comb across a piece of cardboard. You'll see just how a grasshopper makes his rasping sound. Only males are noisy. A female grasshopper merely listens — with ears that are not en each side of her head, but on each side of her body.
