One kind of snake has hard squarish plates on its underside. It uses these instead of feet. Each plate can move a little. The snake lifts a plate, then pushes back with it against the earth. The backward push of the plates shoves the snake forward — the way ski poles shove a skier. Most snakes slither forward by pushing with their many ribs against rough places in the earth.
