There are several species of hyenas. The common striped hyena is native to northern Africa and southern Asia as far inland as Persia. It has long, erect ears, prominent eyes, low quarters and high shoulders, and a shaggy, bristling mane. Its teeth and paws have a tremendous strength, and are capable of breaking the bones of an ox. The hyena
has also an offensive odor.
