How are spiral galaxies related to elliptical galaxies?

Scientists have long theorized that an evolutionary relationship exists between spiral and elliptical galaxies, either that spiral galaxies lose their arms over time and become elliptical, or that elliptical galaxies eventually form arms and become spirals. However, it is now considered more likely that the different shapes represent entirely different species of galaxies, meaning that once a spiral galaxy, always a spiral galaxy, and once an elliptical galaxy, always an elliptical galaxy.
