Hymen was at first the name of a marriage song among the Greeks. Later it became the name of the god of marriage. Hymen was supposed to be the son of Apollo and one of the Muses. Wedding guests made sacrifices to him for the happiness of the bride and groom. Hymen is pictured as a youth carrying a torch.
