Origin of wall paper
Wall Paper is a tough, designed paper for beautifying walls. Wall paper originated in China where it was used in small strips and was intricately designed with landscapes. It wag introduced into Europe in the 16th century by Dutch traders. The pattern was applied by means of a stencil until Papillon produced engraved plates for the purpose. Renaissance palaces often had beautiful papers generally representing classical landscapes. The paper was not made in the United States until the middle of the 18th century and the first factories for its production were established in Albany and Philadelphia in 1790. Motives for designs on most of the paper in Colonial homes were furnished by tropical vegetation and fruits. In the middle of the 19th century wall paper began to be made in large quantities and there was a decadence in the patterns. In recent times, however, there is a noticeable improvement, and the possibilities of bright colors and landscapes are again being realized.
