The Kiwi bird

  • The kiwi is a strange looking bird with long, hair-like feathers. It is a timid bird, hiding during the day and hunting at night. Kiwis are found only in forests of New Zealand and nearby islands.
  • This bird is an apteryx, which means wingless. Its tail is barely perceptible. It searches for worms by probing the earth with its long, pointed bill. The nostrils, at the tip of the beak, enable it to smell underground food.
  • Although only as big as the average hen, the female kiwi lays five inch eggs, each weighing one pound and being laid only once or twice a year. The kiwi, like most flightless birds, is nearly extinct.
  • The kiwi bird is a national symbol of the country of New Zealand.
  • There are five recognised species of kiwi, all of which are endangered.
  • The term Kiwi is used all over the world as the colloquial demonym for New Zealanders.
  • Kiwi lay the largest egg in relation to their body size of any species of bird in the world.
