What kind of matter is a spiral galaxy composed of?

   Spiral galaxies include stars of a wide range of ages. The older stars tend to be clustered in the nucleus whereas the younger stars, including stars in formation, inhabit the arms. The interstellar medium (space between stars) of spiral galaxies is densely packed with clouds of gas and dust.
