A legend of medieval origin with many variations in which the Jew who mocked at Christ when he was going to Calvary is condemned to wander forever over the globe. The story offered a good setting for romantic sentiment, social theorizing, and a number of other literary attitudes and judgments. It was used by Goethe, Schlegel, Shelley, and Eugene Sue.
