What is a fumarole?

   A fumarole is an opening in the earth's crust, usually in a volcanic region, from which steam and gases issue. The gases are usually carbon dioxide, hydrochloric acid, and hydrogen sulfide. The world's largest area of fumaroles is the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes, near Katmai Volcano in Alaska.
