What are springtails?

   The springtails (Collembola) are an order of primitive wingless insects which, together with the Thysanura, are included in the small group Apterygota. The popular name refers to a springing fork usually present on the abdomen. The Podura aquatica is commonly found on stagnant water in Great Britain.
