Delirium tremens is an acute mental disturbance that is sometimes experienced by chronic alcoholics after the abrupt removal of alcohol. Delirium tremens is characterized by muscular tremors, restlessness, irritability, and confusion. The patient often suffers terrifying hallucinations of weird objects or animals. Other symptoms may include severe vomiting and high fever. In serious cases the condition may lead to death. Treatment includes the administration of sedatives and tranquilizing drugs. The condition usually subsides gradually.
