The pilot of a supersonic airplane could not, in case of danger, jump in parachute. Fortunately for him, a powerful device can eject him out of the plane along with the seat and a parachute.
In aircraft that reach or exceed Mach 1 (sound barrier), the only way to save the life of the endangered pilot is to project him out of the aircraft. But this is a serious risk. The seat, propelled outwards by the explosion of a load of gunpowder, transforms the pilot sitting on it into a real projectile: the force of the explosion and the resistance of the air can cause injuries to the aviator, who, before pressing the trigger, must take the precaution of covering himself with a solid protective screen.
