Before a new machine or appliance is mass-produced, it is necessary to build a model with which all the safety and solidity tests are carried out; this model is the prototype.
Industrialists carry out their projects in several stages: drawing up plans, building experimental models, checking on test benches and modifying successive prototypes. Finally, mass production is undertaken. The purpose of the tests is to determine the possibilities of the manufactured apparatus and to increase to the maximum the safety in its use. Generally, test pilots deal with terrestrial, aerial and even interplanetary prototypes.
