What is soap? How does soap work?

Facts about soap for kids

how does soap work

Water does not attack or dissolve the fatty bodies that dirty our skin. Soap, on the other hand, breaks down grease and dirt into small particles that are carried away by the water.

Some products dissolve in water. However, the fatty bodies resist their action if they are not emulsified by means of soap or any other detergent. The soap divides the fat into tiny particles and wraps each of these in a very thin film that makes any new agglomeration of the fat body impossible. The soaps are made from animal or vegetable fats, which are boiled with caustic soda.
