VIRGINIA DARE (1587- ?), was the first English child born in
America. Her parents were members of a group of 117 colonists who settled
on Roanoke Island in 1587. Virginia Dare was the daughter of Ananias
Dare and Ellinor White. She was born on August 18, and was named
Virginia in what is believed to have been the first English christening
ceremony in the New World.
