Fred Astaire quotes

Fred Astaire (1899–1987) was an American film and stage dancer, actor, singer and choreographer.

  • I have no desire to prove anything by it. I have never used it as an outlet or a means of expressing myself. I just dance.
  • When working on my choreography I am not always receptive to outside suggestions or opinions. I believe that if you have something in mind in the way of a creation, such as a new dance, a sequence, or an effect, you are certain to come up with inaccurate criticism and damaging results if you go around asking for opinions.
  • But I do nothing that I don't like, such as "inventing" up to the arty or "down" to the corny. I happen to relish a certain type of corn. What I think is the really dangerous approach is the "let's be artistic" attitude. I know that artistry just happens.

  • Oh, there's no such thing as my favorite performance. I can't sit here today and look back, and say, Top Hat was better than Easter Parade or any of the others. I just don't look back, period. When I finish with a project, I say 'all right, that's that. What's next?'

David Belle quotes

David Belle (born 29 April 1973 in Fécamp, France) is the founder of parkour and its most famous practitioner. Belle began parkour when he was 15, deeply inspired by his father Raymond Belle and the "methode naturelle" (created by Georges Hébert) who had also been the reason for much of Belle's early physical development.

  • "At the physical end, Parkour is getting over all the obstacles in your path as you would in an emergency situation. You want to move in such a way, with any movement, that will help you gain the most ground on someone/something as if escaping from someone/something or chasing toward someone/something. Also, wherever you go, you must be able to get back. If you go from A to B, you need to be able to get back from B to A. You don't need to do the same "move," but just get back."
  • "My thing from the beginning is to have it be useful, and be able to help others. It's about being efficient and getting there as fast as you can. If people want to do it more artistically or in a freestyle way, I have absolutely no problem with it — that's the way it's going to evolve. It's not my style, but if it's other people's [style], that's perfect."
  • "Parkour belongs to the ones who live it, not the ones who want to live thanks to it"
  • "Our aim is to take our art to the world and make people understand what it is to move."
  • "Bare feet are the best shoes!"
  • "If you are in front of a wall that you cannot get past, would you just keep banging your head into the wall?... No, you would find a new wall."
  • "Obstacles are found everywhere, and in overcoming them we nourish ourselves."

Mikhail Baryshnikov quotes

Mikhail Nikolaevich Baryshnikov (born January 27, 1948) is a Soviet-born Russian American dancer, choreographer, and actor, often cited alongside Vaslav Nijinsky and Rudolf Nureyev as one of the greatest ballet dancers of the 20th century.

  • "You know, I never planned to leave. I was not extremely patriotic about Mother Russia. You know, I played their game, pretending, of course. You have to deal with, you know, party people, KGB... Horrifying."
  • I think I got disappointed over the years about New York, about the States. You know, sometimes you go and visit Europe and see good old socialism in its good part! You see public concern about art, and young people's participation and young faces in the audience. Then you arrive in the States and it is $150 to go to an opera. Ridiculous. We have so much young talent on the streets, but because everything is commercial they finally drift away from their dream of their life.

Sexuality is an expression of our spirituality. Sex makes you get real.

I love doing what I do, but I don't like seeing the finished product.

When I did TV shows and movies, the studios did demographic research. They were shocked to find that my audience isn't just men who are too drunk to turn off the TV after football. It's women, too. I don't know exactly why, other than that I've tried to remain true to myself for all these years. I have gone through a lot, and I've been open about it. Maybe they look at me and can see how you can grow up, have children, continue to be sexy, get married and divorced and, though you grew up poor, live the American dream. I'm very blessed. I'm happy for it all.

Wood veneer

Veneer is a thin layer of a substance usually applied on wood or plastic. It is used most often on furniture.
Wood veneer is made by slicing a layer as thin as 1/100 inch from a log of beautiful and expensive wood and gluing the layer to the surface of a stronger, but less expensive, wood. Such a method combines strength with texture, and provides an inexpensive desired surface and grain pattern.
The wood layer is cut by rotating a log against a knife, and the veneer is peeled away in a sheet. The layer can be sliced from end to end in straight cuts, giving a different grain surface. By slicing a log in thin sheets, many square feet can thus be obtained from one log.

Velocity

Velocity is the simplest measurement of speed in a linear direction during a given time. An object, moving in a rectilinear motion, is timed; its velocity is calculated by dividing the distance from starting to finishing point by time required. Velocity is a quantity, related to speed and distance. It is expressed as X feet per second, or X miles per hour.
The units of velocity may be feet per second, feet per minute, or miles per hour. Strictly speaking, velocity of a moving particle is a VECTOR quantity which indicates both direction and speed of MOTION. Thus, when one speaks of the velocity of the wind as 15 miles per hour, he must also state from what direction the wind is blowing.
When the physicist uses the word speed, he refers to non-vector motion; that is, speed is change of position of a body, but without regard to direction.

What is a dehumidifier?

A dehumidifier is an apparatus far removing water vapor from the air. A room dehumidifier is a small, portable unit that can be placed in the center of a damp room to dry the air. Most dehumidifiers operate by passing the moist air through a cooling device similar to the cooling coil of a refrigerator.
Cooling makes the water vapor condense out of the damp air. The condensed vapor collects in a pan, which must be emptied periodically.

The dehydration of food

Dehydration of food is a method of preserving foods by removing large amounts of water from them. Drying is probably the oldest method of food preservation. It was first practiced by prehistoric man, who dried grains, fruit, vegetables, and meats by exposing them to the sun. Although some foods are still dried by the sun, most dehydrated foods today an dried by artificial means. Some commonly known dried foods are raisins, prunes, peaches, milk, and eggs.
A major advantage of dehydrated foods is that they are relatively compact and can be stored in a smaller amount of space than can an equal quantity of fresh foods. Dried foods can also be stored without refrigeration. A disadvantage of dehydrated foods is that they readily absorb moisture from the air and must be carefully wrapped to prevent them from spoiling.

What is a degree?

The degree is a unit of angular measurement or a unit of temperature. As a unit of angular measurement, the degree is one of 360 equal parts of the total angle formed by a circle. Thus the angle formed by a straight line is 180 degrees (180°), and the angle formed by two intersecting perpendicular lines is 90 degrees (90°). The angular degree is further divided into 60 minutes, and the minute is subdivided into 60 seconds.
Several different units of temperature are also called degrees. On the Fahrenheit temperature scale the interval between the respective temperatures at which water will freeze and boil is divided into 180 degrees. On the centigrade scale the same interval is divided into 100 degrees.

Edgar Degas

Edgar Degas (July 19, 1834 - Sept. 26, 1917) holds a unique position in the history of art. In his works he combined the Classical emphasis on pure line and composition with the Impressionist use of bright colors and interest in scenes of everyday life. Degas achieved a novel freshness and immediacy by tilting the perspective in his paintings and by showing figures from unusual angles. He is especially famous for his pictures of ballet dancers.
The son of a prosperous banker, Degas originally intended to study law, but soon abandoned it for painting. Degas contributed to several Impressionist exhibitions, but he never considered himself an Impressionist and soon broke with the movement.
After 1886, Degas lived and worked in seclusion. As his eyesight began to fail, he turned from oil
painting to pastels. His pastel drawings are noted for their exceptional strength and brilliance of color.
When he was nearly blind, Degas created hundreds of sculptures, many of them statuettes of figures in motion.

Who was Lee De Forest?

Lee De Forest was an American engineer and inventor. Born Council Bluffs, Iowa, August 26, 1873. Died Hollywood, California, July 22, 1961.
De Forest invented the three-element electron tube, called the triode, that was the basis for the development of radio and the entire electronics industry. The triode, which De Forest patented in 1906, was at first used only as a detector in radio receivers. In 1912 the triode was used as a signal amplifier in telephone lines, making possible the first transcontinental telephone conversation. A year later, De Forest discovered that the triode could also be adapted for use as an oscillator, or generator of high-frequency alternating current. The use of triodes as oscillators and amplifiers completed the basic development of the radio.
De Forest was also one of the first radio broadcasters. In 1910 he broadcast the voice of Enrico Caruso in the first opera program to be transmitted over the air. In 1915, De Forest broadcast the human voice from Arlington, Va., to Paris, France, and in 1916 he produced the first news program.
From 1902 to 1952, De Forest patented more than 300 inventions. He perfected a method for producing sound on film in 1923 and invented the photoelectric cell in 1929. De Forest also helped develop television and radiotherapy.

Mint (plant)

Mint is the name of a large family of plants. Some are catnip, thyme, bee balm, lavender, pepper-mint, spearmint, sage, rosemary, and marjoram. These plants are grown all over the world and have many uses, especially in flavorings.

What is Mechanics?

Mechanics is the science which deals with the effect of forces upon matter at rest or matter in motion. The laws of solids, liquids, and gases have a part in this process. Mechanics is one of the basic studies of ENGINEERING, PHYSICS, and ASTRONOMY.
Mechanics deals with forces and the motion produced by them. People often think of a force as a push or a pull, but the idea of force as that which produces or destroys motion is modern. This concept of force has been useful, and can be attributed to ISAAC NEWTON, who is considered the chief founder of the science of mechanics.

Mineralogy

Mineralogy is the systematic study of minerals, the materials of which the rocks of the earth's crust are made. It excludes the study of substances resulting from the processes of plant and animal life, such as COAL, OIL, AMBER, PEARL, and animal bones. While such substances are often listed under mineral resources, they are not true minerals, but rather are complex mixtures.
Mineralogy is one of the very old sciences. During the STONE AGE, man knew about, and used, minerals. By the Bronze Age, man was familiar with the process of smelting, to obtain metal from natural compounds.
With the invention and development of new techniques of mineral study and the rapid discovery of new minerals, the accumulating data on the subject of minerals and mineralogy has grown to tremendous proportions. At present, there are many specialized classifications, or fields, of mineralogy, some of which are sub-classified further. The four principal branches of this science, however, are crystallography, physical mineralogy, optical mineralogy, and chemical mineralogy.

Furs

Long ago people in cold countries began wearing furs to keep warm. Later, kings and queens decorated their robes with fur to show that they were rulers. Now furs are common. Millions of people wear them for both warmth and beauty.
A great many animals have coats of fur. But the fur of some is much more beautiful than that of others. The fur of some, moreover, wears especially well.
The fur of the sable is the aristocrat among furs. The best sable comes from Siberia. At one time only the members of the royal family of Russia were allowed to wear it. Some animals change their coats with the season. The ermine does. In the summer it is brown so that it matches the ground. In the winter it is white so that it matches the snow except for a black tip on its tail. White ermine fur came to be a favorite for royal robes. Chinchilla is one of the rarest and most delicate of all furs. It comes from a dainty little animal of South America. The beaver, mink, musk-rat, fox, and seal also furnish us with excellent fur. Rabbit fur is not as durable as most furs, but it is much used.
Many kinds of fur are dyed and given trade names that do not tell what animal they come from. Rabbit fur, for instance, has been sold under such different names as "lapin" and "Alaska seal."
Fur trapping and trading have had a great deal to do with opening up new lands. Fur traders were the leaders in exploring much of North America.

Forage crops

Any crop is a forage crop if most of the plant makes good food for farm animals. The most important forage crops are grasses, especially bluegrass and timothy. Clover and alfalfa are also important forage crops. Bluegrass, timothy, clover, and alfalfa are good grazing crops —that is, animals may walk around over the pasture nipping off the tops of the plants. These crops make good hay, too. They can be cut, dried, and stored as winter food for stock.
Corn may also be called a forage crop. While it is green the stem, leaves, and young ears are sometimes cut into small pieces and stored in silos. The cut-up corn, or silage, stays green and makes excellent food for cattle in the wintertime. And in the fall after the corn is husked, cattle are sometimes turned into a cornfield. They eat the corn that is left and any parts of the stalks and leaves which are still good. Clover, alfalfa, and sorghums may also be packed in silos.

Thomas Jefferson quotes. Great quotes by Thomas Jefferson. Thomas Jefferson quotations.

Fainting

Fainting is a temporary loss of consciousness caused by lack of oxygen in the higher parts of the brain. It is commonly the result of a fall in blood pressure and is more likely to occur when a person is standing. Fainting may be associated with real or imagined injuries, involving preparation of the body for fleeing. The enlargement of the blood vessels in the limbs lowers the blood pressure. The person becomes weak and nauseated and faints unless he sits or lies down. Loss of blood also causes fainting, as it reduces the blood pressure.
If you feel that you are about to faint, you should lie down. If this cannot be done, sit down and place the head between the knees, or kneel on one knee and place the head below the heart. Treatment of fainting includes loosening tight clothing, applying ammonia or smelling salts to the nose, and sprinkling the face with cold water. A person who has fainted should be kept lying down until completely recovered.

What is evaporation?

Evaporation is the escape from the surface of a liquid of the molecules that, because of thermal (heat) agitation, are moving with enough velocity to break the surface tension of the liquid. As the heat contained in a liquid increases, the activity of its molecules and the evaporation also increase.
A practical limit is placed on the amount of evaporation by the concentration of molecules as vapor in the atmosphere around the liquid. The sealing of a container of liquid, such as a jar, restricts the atmosphere into which the molecules can escape. This atmosphere is quickly saturated by the molecules of the liquid, thus halting evaporation and preventing the drying of the contents of the jar.

What is a Volmeter?

A voltmeter is an instrument used to measure the voltage or difference in electrical pressure between two points of an electrical circuit. The meter is placed across that part of the circuit where the voltage is to be measured.
Because direct current (DC) circuits have a steady voltage and alternating current circuits (AC) have a varying, pulsating voltage, voltmeter construction must be designed to allow for these differences.
Direct currents are usually measured by a moving-coil, permanent magnet voltmeter or by a fixed-coil, moving magnet meter. The moving-coil meters use the most common of electric meter designs, the D'Arsonval movement. The current from the external circuit flows through the moving coil of the meter and sets up a magnetic field around the coil. This field opposes the field due to the permanent magnet, and the coil is made to rotate. The coil rotates until the force of the opposing magnetic fields is just balanced by the mechanical force of the springs on which the coil is suspended. The larger the current, the greater the rotation of the coil. Since a pointer is attached to the movable coil, as the coil rotates the pointer indicates the voltage-value on a scale calibrated (marked off) in volts.
Fixed-coil, moving magnet voltmeters are, in principle, similar to moving coil meters except that it is the permanent magnet that rotates with the pointer attached. A fixed coil surrounds the magnet.
Alternating voltages are measured with moving-vane meters, THERMOCOUPLE meters, copper oxide rectifier meter, or vacuum tube voltmeters.
In the moving-vane meter, a moving vane of soft iron is pivoted within a circular coil. When current flows through the coil, the moving vane is attracted by the field of the coil. As the vane moves, the pointer attached to the vane moves across a scale.
In a thermocouple meter, the current passes through a coil which heats the junction of two dissimilar metals, usually bismuth and antimony. The electromotive force generated by the junction is fed to a D'Arnsonval meter.
In a vacuum tube voltmeter, a vacuum tube isolates the input circuit of the meter from the circuit being measured. The AC is sometimes rectified by the tube and the resultant DC is fed to a D'Arsonval meter. At other times, the AC is merely amplified and fed directly to an AC meter.

What is Voice?

Voice is sound made by the vocal organs of people and some animals. Ideas and feelings can be communicated from one being to another by means of the voice. For example, the voice of a chattering robin warns other birds to stay away from the nest. The voice of a barking dog may indicate that a stranger is near. The voice of a crying baby may indicate hunger or sickness. As human babies grow, they learn to use the voice to speak.
No two voices are exactly the same, so the sound of the voice identifies the speaker. Males usually have deeper voices than females. They have longer vocal cords. The singing voice expresses a wider range than the speaking voice. Some voices are uninteresting because they do not vary in tone. This evenness of pitch is known as monotone.

Who were the Gepidae?

The Gepidae were an ancient people, first known in history as settled near the southeastern shore of the Baltic. It is uncertain if the Gepidae were Goths, though closely connected with them politically. In the third century, together with the West and East Goths, they made inroads into Moesia and Thrace. In the fifth century, with the Vandals and Burgundians, they moved into Italy, but were defeated in 406 by Stilicho. They were conquered by Attila; but on his death (453) they occupied Hungary and Transylvania. It was to check their power that Justinian invited the Lombards to occupy the Roman provinces between the Danube and the Alps. Conquered by the Lombards and Avars, the Gepidae were gradually extirpated, and their lands seized by the Avars.

What is geotropism?

Geotropism is a movement of plant organs in response to the stimulus of the Earth's gravitational force. Main roots exhibit positive geotropism, that is, they grow straight downward. Main stems and flower stalks exhibit negative geotropism, growing upward. Leaves, lateral roots, and many stem branches show diageotropism, i.e., assume a horizontal or diagonal position.
Geotropic curvatures may be most easily observed by placing plants on their sides. After several hours in this position, the growing tips of roots and stems show definite changes in the direction of their growth, the stems turning upward, the roots downward. That gravity is the stimulus initiating these movements may be demonstrated by placing a plant on a clinostat, an instrument that rotates the plant on a horizontal axis, equalizing the force of gravity on all sides of the plant. In this condition, the roots and stems continue their horizontal growth and do not show geotropic curvatures. When the clinostat is stopped, so that the plant is in an unchanging horizontal position, geotropic bending occurs.
The gravitational stimulus causes an unequal distribution of plant growth hormones (auxins) on the upper and lower sides of roots and stems, leading to a difference in the rates of tissue growth on the upper and lower sides. In main stems that are in a horizontal position, the rate of growth becomes more rapid on the lower side, thus causing an upward curvature. In main roots resting on their sides the rate of growth becomes more rapid on the upper side, thus causing a downward curvature.
Geotropism occurs in all higher plants and in such lower types as mosses, liverworts, ferns, many fungi, etc. Geotropism, like other tropisms, is a method by which plants adjust themselves to external stimuli and thus results in a definite advantage to plants.

What is a ghost?

A ghost is the apparition of a disembodied spirit. From earliest times the belief has prevailed that the souls of the dead return to haunt the scenes of their earthly existence. It is commonly believed that the vision of a ghost forebodes death or disaster, though specters may also be beneficent, as the ancestral ghosts of European legend, who warn their descendants of approaching danger or who counsel them in critical moments of their life. The traditional, ghost, whether malevolent or benign, bears the same appearance that it did in life, but it is luminous and transparent, and is commonly clothed in a shroud. Ghosts of murderers and other criminals appear bearing the instruments of their crime; they "haunt the scene of their crime," as the saying goes, and not uncommonly are accompanied by their victims.
In spite of the great age of ghostly legend, the range of behavior of ghosts is relatively limited. They soar over graveyards, roam through ruined castles and deserted houses, turn over tables, and other furniture, and produce knocking noises, moans, groans, wails, and "eldritch shrieks." Rarely they are represented as wreaking physical violence upon human beings. More significant than these perfunctory activities attributed to them in legend is their function as mediators or counselors. Because ghosts are supposed to have access to superhuman power and wisdom, the curious and inquisitive of all ages have sought to conjure them, usually through the aid of a "medium," a person peculiarly fitted to communicate with the spirit world. The medium's power consists of an extreme psychic sensitivity, and this faculty is common to the shamans, witch doctors, and medicine men of primitive society, the sibyls of classical antiquity, the seers and necromancers of the Middle Ages, and the mediums and clairvoyants of modern occultism.
In America, in 1850, the curious demonstrations of the Fox sisters awakened new interest in the subject of ghosts and apparitions, though in their demonstrations the ghostly manifestation consisted only of mysterious knockings. As the vogue for consulting spirits grew, the movement took on a religious character, and in 1863 a Spiritualist church was founded. The London Society for Psychical Research, founded in 1882, devoted itself to scientific investigation of ghostly phenomena produced during spiritualistic seances.
